Arbeiter-und-Bauern-Fakultät Dresden, Socialist educational complex in Dresden-Strehlen, Germany.
The Arbeiter-und-Bauern-Fakultät is a three-story sandstone building located at Weberplatz 5, defined by a raised base level, fifteen window axes, and a tower-like form facing Teplitzer Street. It now houses cultural sciences departments of TU Dresden and can be entered through the main entrance featuring sculptural elements in the stairwell.
This site was built over the remains of a teacher training college constructed between 1906 and 1910, which was destroyed in 1945. After the war, a new faculty building was erected in its place as part of postwar reconstruction and educational reorganization.
The building displays wall paintings by Wilhelm Lachnit inside, while sculptor Wilhelm Landgraf and Gerhard Markwald contributed carved decorations on the exterior that together shaped the artistic character of the space. These artworks remain visible and express how the institution was conceived as more than just a functional building.
Access is through the main entrance, which features a prominent sculptural staircase that creates a distinctive arrival experience. The interior spaces can be explored during university activities, with the generous layout making it easy to find your way around.
From 1949 to 1961, this institution operated a specialized program preparing children of workers and farmers for university studies as a key part of East German educational reform. This initiative aimed to create educational opportunities for youth from these social backgrounds.
