Castra Nemaninga, Ancient Roman fort in Obernburg, Germany.
Castra Nemaninga is a Roman military fort in Obernburg that guarded the empire's border along the Main River. The site shows stone walls, building foundations, and remains of defensive structures spread across the hillside.
The fort was built around 179 AD under Emperor Marcus Aurelius as a key outpost against threats from the north. It was eventually abandoned as Roman control shifted over the following centuries.
The archaeological discoveries at Castra Nemaninga provide evidence of Roman military life, including coins, pottery, weapons, and daily items used by soldiers.
The site is easy to walk around, with information signs explaining the fort's layout and the purpose of different areas. The ground is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is helpful for exploring the ruins comfortably.
Excavations uncovered around 700 gold coins, revealing how wealthy this military outpost was compared to others. This rare discovery shows how important trade and resources were at the border.
