Viktualienmarkt, Outdoor food market in Altstadt, Munich, Germany
Viktualienmarkt is an outdoor food market in the Altstadt district of Munich with more than one hundred stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, fish, baked goods, and spices. The area spreads across several connected sections with fountains, trees, and open walkways between the vendor stands.
King Maximilian I moved the central food market from Marienplatz to this location in 1807 because the old square had become too small. The new market grew over two centuries into a permanent part of daily life in Munich.
Traditional beer gardens in the middle of the square gather locals and visitors at long wooden tables under chestnut trees. Vendors often speak in Bavarian dialect and offer regional specialties that fill Munich kitchens every day.
The stalls open Monday through Saturday, and the market sits just a short walk from Marienplatz station. Visitors who arrive early in the morning find the freshest produce and can move more easily between the stands.
A large maypole from 1962 shows carved figures with scenes from Munich traditions, including brewery teams and Oktoberfest moments. The decorations change every few years and reflect the shifting crafts and customs of the city.
