FernUniversität in Hagen, Distance education university in Hagen, Germany.
FernUniversität in Hagen is a state-funded distance learning institution in North Rhine-Westphalia offering degree programs in law, business, cultural studies, mathematics, and psychology. More than 50 locations across German-speaking areas and beyond provide students with access to advising and in-person sessions, while most learning occurs through digital materials and postal deliveries.
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia founded the institution in 1974 following the model of the British Open University and began teaching operations the following year. In the first decades, student numbers grew steadily until the distance teaching institution became the largest by enrollment in the German-speaking world.
The institution maintains five distinct faculties covering cultural sciences, mathematics, business administration, law, and psychology, fostering academic diversity.
Students can register on a central digital platform and receive printed or electronic course materials delivered multiple times per semester. Regional study centers open at different times for in-person meetings with advisors, with some locations accessible only on weekends or evenings.
Around 80,000 students enroll each year, making this institution the second-largest in Germany by number of registrations. No other state-funded distance teaching institution in the German-speaking world offers comparable programs with fully recognized degrees.
