Artesischer Brunnen, Heritage water well at Albertplatz, Dresden, Germany.
The Artesischer Brunnen is a water well in Dresden's Neustadt district that brings water from deep underground to the surface naturally without machinery. The well house features a slate pyramid roof designed by city architect Hans Erlwein and stands on Antonstrasse near a tall building.
Miners from Freiberg drilled this well during the 1830s to supply clean water to Dresden's developing Neustadt neighborhood. The well house structure was added later to protect the source and became an architectural feature of the district.
The name comes from the Artois region in France, famous for its natural underground springs that flow without pumping. Visitors can observe the distinctive pyramid-roofed structure and watch water emerge from the fountain's outlets.
Water flows continuously from the ground year-round without any pumps or electrical systems needed to make it work. The fountain stands in a public square accessible to visitors and is easy to find on Antonstrasse.
The water travels from mountain ranges south of Dresden, passing through layers of chalk and sandstone before reaching the surface. This long underground journey naturally filters and cleans the water.
