St.-Nikolaus-Kirche

The St.-Nikolaus-Kirche features a 79.3-meter tower, making it the tallest village church tower in Germany, with distinctive stone walls and rounded arches.

After a lightning strike destroyed the original structure in 1892, architect Johannes Franziskus Klomp constructed the current church between 1896 and 1900, incorporating the old tower base.

The church houses the Ankumer Cross from 1280, while Berlin sculptor Paul Brandenburg created modern elements including the altar table, tabernacle, and lectern.

The church stands on Vogelberg hill above the market arcades, serving as the central religious building for the Catholic community of Ankum.

Three lower levels of the original medieval tower, separated by cornices, remain integrated into the current church structure from the turn of the century.
