Eberbach Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Rheingau, Germany
The Romanesque and Gothic stone structures of Eberbach Abbey include a basilica, cloisters, dormitories, and wine storage facilities across the extensive grounds.
Bernard of Clairvaux established Eberbach Abbey in 1136, which grew to house 100 monks and 200 lay brothers during its peak in medieval times.
The monastery maintains centuries-old wine production traditions through the Eberbach Monastery Winery, continuing the legacy of Riesling cultivation in Rheingau.
Visitors can explore the monastery grounds through guided tours, attend concerts during the Rheingau Music Festival, and participate in wine tasting sessions.
The monastery served as the primary filming location for the 1986 medieval murder mystery 'The Name of the Rose' starring Sean Connery.

Hesse displays significant historical structures from multiple periods. The Roman fort Saalburg presents military architecture from the 2nd century. The monasteries of Arnsburg and Seligenstadt preserve Carolingian and Romanesque construction. Trendelburg and Friedrichstein castles connect medieval history with the Grimm era. The Crystal Cave Kubach and the Stone Field in Odenwald add geological formations to the cultural heritage.
