Eberbach Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Rheingau, Germany

The Romanesque and Gothic stone structures of Eberbach Abbey include a basilica, cloisters, dormitories, and wine storage facilities across the extensive grounds.

Bernard of Clairvaux established Eberbach Abbey in 1136, which grew to house 100 monks and 200 lay brothers during its peak in medieval times.

The monastery maintains centuries-old wine production traditions through the Eberbach Monastery Winery, continuing the legacy of Riesling cultivation in Rheingau.

Visitors can explore the monastery grounds through guided tours, attend concerts during the Rheingau Music Festival, and participate in wine tasting sessions.

The monastery served as the primary filming location for the 1986 medieval murder mystery 'The Name of the Rose' starring Sean Connery.
