The Augsburg Stock Exchange was a financial building located at Ludwigsplatz near the town hall, known for its classical proportions and architectural style. It functioned as a center for commercial transactions and financial activities in the city.
The building was founded in 1540 during the Fugger dynasty and served as a center for finance for many years. It later merged with the Munich exchange in 1935, marking the end of its independent operation.
The name reflects Augsburg's role as a financial hub during the Renaissance, where merchants and money changers gathered to conduct business. Its position at Ludwigsplatz made it a natural meeting point for people engaged in trade and currency transactions.
The original site is located at Ludwigsplatz and is easy to reach from the town hall. Although the building no longer exists, the square itself offers good orientation in the city center.
The building was severely damaged during 1944 air raids and later demolished in the 1960s. This cleared the site and created an open view of the adjacent town hall that visitors can still appreciate today.
