Augsburger Christkindlesmarkt, Christmas market in Rathausplatz, Augsburg, Germany

Augsburger Christkindlesmarkt is a Christmas market held on Rathausplatz in Augsburg's old town, in front of the Renaissance town hall with its onion-shaped towers. Wooden stalls sell gingerbread, Christmas cribs and decorations, and since 1963 the market has stood on this square after moving through the city for centuries.

The market was first recorded in 1498 as the Lebzeltermarkt, when the city council regulated the stalls in front of the cathedral and Perlachturm. It was later called Nikolai-Markt and, around 1808, Weihnachts- und Christmarkt. It has moved repeatedly through the city center and has been held on Rathausplatz since 1963; it officially bears the name Christkindlesmarkt only since 1949.

Since 1977, the Engelesspiel has taken place at 18:00 on Advent weekends and at the market's opening and closing. To Christmas music, 24 angels appear in the windows and on the balcony of Augsburg's town hall, their costumes modelled on an altarpiece by Hans Holbein the Elder.

The market runs from late November through December, with varying hours depending on the day of the week. It closes at 20:00 on Sundays through Thursdays, while staying open until 21:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.
