Saffenburg

Saffenburg is a castle ruin in Mayschoß with impressive stone fragments that stretch across a large area and reveal the structure of a medieval fortress. The remaining walls show how defenders once controlled the valley below.

The fortress was founded in the late 11th century and served for centuries as a military stronghold in the Ahrtal region. It experienced regional conflicts but maintained its strategic role for a long period.

The fortress took its name from its builders and was long seen by local people as a symbol of power in the valley. The ruins today still show how important this stronghold was for controlling the region.

The site is reachable from above and offers views of the surroundings, but requires sturdy footwear and caution on uneven ground. Visitors should be prepared for rough paths and incomplete structures.

Despite numerous attacks and sieges, the fortress was actually captured only twice, a testament to its solid construction and design. This resilience made it one of the most difficult strongholds to take in its era.
