Baumberge, Nature reserve in Reinickendorf, Germany.
Baumberge is a nature reserve in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf, made up of wooded hills, clearings, and open ground. A network of marked trails runs through the area, connecting higher points with quieter woodland sections.
The area received official protection in 2011, when Berlin moved to formally safeguard natural land within its city boundaries. The hills and woodlands had already served as a habitat for wildlife and plants for a long time before that.
The name Baumberge, meaning roughly 'tree hills' in German, reflects the mix of wooded slopes and open ground that visitors walk through today. On weekends, the area draws people from the surrounding neighborhoods who use the trails for quiet walks or birdwatching.
The reserve is well connected to Berlin's public transport, with stops close to the main entry points. Most trails are easy to follow on foot, though some sections on the higher ground can be steeper.
The reserve is part of a Europe-wide network for protecting endangered habitats, which means decisions about managing it go beyond the local level. This also means that certain interventions common in other Berlin city parks are not allowed here.
