Dillenburger Schloss, Castle ruins in Dillenburg, Germany
The fortified structure stands on a hill at 958 feet elevation, featuring remaining casemates from the 16th century and the Wilhelm Tower built between 1872 and 1875.
The castle served as the primary residence of the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg until French forces caused extensive damage during the Seven Years' War in 1760.
The Wilhelm Tower contains the Oranje-Nassaumuseum, which documents the connection between the Nassau dynasty and the Netherlands through artifacts and exhibitions.
The castle grounds connect to regional hiking trails, including the Orange Route and Rothaarsteig, with guided tours available through the underground defense system.
The defense system could accommodate over 2000 soldiers within its casemates, featuring the Lion's Den well and the Rubens prison among its preserved structures.
