Basilika St. Margareta

St. Margareta is a Romanesque church in Gerresheim with three naves arranged in a cross shape and an octagonal tower rising above the intersection of the nave and transept. The interior features pointed arches and displays typical regional Romanesque design elements.

Construction of the basilica began in 1220 under Abbess Guda von Berg and it was consecrated in 1236. This important religious structure has remained standing for nearly 800 years.

The basilica displays late Romanesque religious construction from the Lower Rhine region, with pointed arches and ribbed vaults shaping the interior. Visitors can observe these characteristic features while walking through and notice the craft in every detail.

A wooden crucifix from the 10th century, among the oldest Romanesque monumental sculptures in the Lower Rhine region, hangs behind the main altar. This carved artwork remains a rare witness to early craftwork in the area.
