Hohenaschau Castle, Medieval castle in Aschau im Chiemgau, Germany

Hohenaschau is a medieval castle in Aschau im Chiemgau in Bavaria, standing on an elevated position at the entrance to the Priental Valley. The structure combines Renaissance features with Baroque additions that were added over time.

The castle was founded in the late 12th century by Konrad and Arnold von Hirnsberg and served as an administrative center for noble families in the area. Over time it was rebuilt and expanded repeatedly, leading to its mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle now houses the Priental Museum, where visitors can see objects from the region and everyday life of past inhabitants. The rooms show how people lived and worked here across the centuries.

Visitors reach the castle on foot from the village via a short path, with walkways well maintained during the visiting season. Exploring the interior is only possible with a guide, so it's worth checking when tours are available before visiting.

The Laubensaal is a room inside the castle whose walls are covered with complete paintings from the 17th century. This artwork is one of the highlights that can only be seen when touring with a guide.
