Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve, Transboundary biosphere reserve in Rhineland-Palatinate and Grand Est, Germany and France
The reserve spans 3,018 square kilometers across Germany and France, containing the largest continuous forest area in Western Europe with sandstone cliffs and valleys.
Established in December 1998, this reserve became the first UNESCO transboundary biosphere in Europe, encompassing territories from both German and French regions.
The landscape holds 95 medieval castles and fortifications distributed throughout its territory, representing centuries of regional architectural development and military history.
Visitors can explore more than 1,000 kilometers of certified hiking trails connecting different sections of the reserve through forests, cliffs, and mountain paths.
The reserve supports populations of lynx, wildcats, and peregrine falcons while maintaining sustainable agricultural practices for wine, almonds, and tropical fruits.
