Ouvrage Hochwald, Military fortification in Drachenbronn-Birlenbach, France
Ouvrage Hochwald is an underground military installation near Drachenbronn-Birlenbach consisting of ten combat blocks and three entrance blocks. These blocks connect through tunnels that run across the Hochwald ridge beneath the surface.
Construction began in 1929 and continued until 1933 as part of France's Maginot Line defense system. Extensive excavation and concrete reinforcement were needed to build this fortification along the border.
The fort shows how French engineers designed military defenses during the 1930s and how soldiers organized their daily operations underground. Visitors can experience this history through the Pierre Jost Museum, which opens on national remembrance days to explain French military construction methods.
The site is controlled by the French Air Force and not freely accessible to the public. Visits are only possible during specific events scheduled throughout the year, so planning ahead is important.
This fortification was one of the largest garrison posts along the Maginot Line, housing over 1,000 soldiers from different regiments at the same time. This scale made it a key command center for French border defense.
