Église Saint-Jacques à Stralsund

Saint James Church in Stralsund is a brick structure with a prominent western tower and a rectangular choir section, built following basilica layout. Standing at about 68 meters tall with red masonry walls, this building exemplifies the northern German Brick Gothic style.

The church was first documented in 1303 and underwent construction throughout the 14th century. Local residents contributed thousands of bricks to the project, playing a key role in completing this monumental structure.

The church functions as a cultural center today, hosting theater performances, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year. Visitors experience how the interior has transformed into a dynamic space for artistic events and community gatherings.

The church sits in the center of Stralsund's old town and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that opening times vary by season, with different schedules between summer and winter months.

After World War II damage, the building shifted from religious use to serve as an archive and art storage facility. This transformation into a cultural venue allowed the space to accommodate around 500 visitors in a newly reimagined way.
