Herzogspark, Botanical garden in Regensburg, Germany.
Herzogspark is a botanical garden in Regensburg, located along the Danube and made up of several themed sections as well as a medieval tower. One section follows a Renaissance layout with boxwood hedges, while another is dedicated to plants mentioned in the works of Shakespeare.
The site began as a moated enclosure within the medieval city walls and was transformed into a private noble garden after 1293. It passed into public hands in 1935 and has been open to everyone since.
The garden displays plants arranged in ways that reflect how gardeners have organized knowledge about the plant world over time. The layout shows classical design principles that visitors can still observe in their original patterns today.
The garden is within easy walking distance of Regensburg's old town and can be entered directly from the riverbank. The medieval tower is only open during summer, and the park closes early in the evening.
Where the old city moat once ran, a collection of rhododendrons now fills the space that once held water. Nearby, a lily pond stocked with goldfish sits beside the remains of the old city wall.
