Weihenstephan Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Freising, Germany
The stone abbey stands on a hill overlooking Freising, featuring medieval architecture with a central courtyard and surrounding buildings connected by covered walkways.
Founded in 801 by Bishop Hitto von Freising, the monastery operated continuously until 1803 when it was dissolved during the secularization of Bavaria.
The monastery maintains strong connections to beer crafting traditions, housing a brewery that began operations in 1040 through an official license from Freising.
The former abbey buildings now contain the Technical University of Munich's Faculty of Brewing and Food Technology, offering tours and beer tasting sessions.
The monastery grounds include Europe's oldest brewing site, which continues production as the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan under university supervision.
