Wasserschloss Darfeld

The Darfeld Castle features two main buildings surrounded by water, with Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements incorporating grand galleries and gabled frontages.

Construction of the castle began in 1612 by architect Bernhard Gröninger, replacing a 13th-century water fortress on the site for owner Jobst von Vörden.

The castle belonged to the Droste zu Vischering family from 1680, including notable residents like Clement August, who became Archbishop of Cologne.

Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, the castle requires advance appointments for visits and remains a private residence maintained by its current owners.

Following a severe fire in 1899, the castle underwent extensive restoration until 1902, led by Hermann Schaedtler, who added neo-Renaissance architectural features.
