University of Altdorf

The University of Altdorf was an educational institution in the town center of Altdorf bei Nürnberg, spread across multiple buildings featuring classical German architecture from the 16th century. The structures display stonework and architectural details from that period, with the Wichernhaus preserving the main characteristics of the original design.

Founded in 1578, the institution received official university status in 1622 and closed in 1809 under King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria's administration. During its decades of operation, it grew into a significant educational center before its final closure.
