Düben Heath, Forest nature park between Leipzig and Wittenberg, Germany
Düben Heath is a large nature park containing mixed forests, heathland, wetlands, and numerous lakes spread across the region between Leipzig and Wittenberg. The park has established walking and cycling routes that pass through diverse habitats and connect small towns throughout the area.
The region became a protected area in 1992 to prevent the expansion of lignite mining and preserve the natural landscape. This decision prevented industrial development and maintained the historic heathland and forest character between the Elbe and Mulde rivers.
The Luther Trail weaves through this forest, linking places where Martin Luther lived and worked with traditional heathland settlements. Churches along the route show how faith shaped the cultural identity of these communities.
The NaturparkHaus information center in Bad Düben serves as the main starting point and provides guidance about trails and available activities in the area. From there, visitors can plan and prepare walks or cycling trips in various directions.
Over 350 butterfly species make their home in this landscape, including varieties that have become rare elsewhere in Germany. The numerous lakes and wetlands create habitats where these insects thrive alongside many other wildlife.
