Marienrode Priory

Marienrode Priory is a former Cistercian monastery in Hildesheim featuring a gothic church completed in 1462 and stone buildings from the 18th century arranged around a courtyard with a central pigeon tower. The layout reflects both medieval and later periods of monastic design and use.

The site began as an Augustinian monastery in 1125 and converted to Cistercian monks in 1259, adopting its present name in 1439. This change in religious order brought new architectural styles and ways of organizing community life.

Inside the church, two baroque altars and a gothic sandstone sculpture of Saint Mary create a spiritual atmosphere that reflects monastic life. These artworks show how the monks shaped the sacred space over the centuries.

You reach the grounds by walking a historic linden tree avenue with old paving, which creates a traditional entrance experience. Plan enough time to explore the buildings and courtyard, and ask about guided tours if you want to learn more about monastic life here.

A separate building called Saint Cosmas and Damian Chapel from 1792 sits on the grounds and was converted into a Protestant church after 1830. The altar was replaced in 1835, reflecting the religious shifts that swept through the region.
