Engelthal Abbey, Baroque monastery in Altenstadt, Germany
Engelthal Abbey is a baroque monastery in Altenstadt in the Hesse region, comprising a church, eastern wing, garden spaces, and pastoral lands. The buildings form a connected ensemble that served both spiritual and practical needs of the community.
The monastery was founded in 1268 by knights from the families of Büches and Karben as a Cistercian convent. It was reconstructed following damage during the Thirty Years' War and later revived when Benedictine sisters established a new community there in 1962.
The abbey hosts the Engelthaler Sommerserenade concert series, presenting classical music performances in the church and outdoor spaces throughout the summer.
The monastery follows a daily rhythm of prayer services including early morning Laudes and evening Vespers, with Sunday Eucharist celebrations held at set times. Visitors can attend these services and experience the community's spiritual routine.
The sisters divide their time between liturgical duties and practical work, maintaining a centuries-old balance between contemplation and manual labor. This integrated rhythm of prayer and craft work continues to shape daily life at the monastery today.
