The Buchheim Museum, also called Museum der Phantasie, is a museum in Bernried am Starnberger See. The building, designed by Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner and completed in October 1999, covers around 4,000 square meters and is modelled on a ship, with a long jetty extending over the water of the lake. Sculptures are displayed in the surrounding park.
Lothar-Günther Buchheim, author of the novel Das Boot, wanted his collection housed in Feldafing on the grounds of the Villa Maffei, but residents rejected the plan in a referendum. The architects Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner adapted their finished design for the new site in Bernried, where the building was completed in October 1999. Bavaria largely financed the roughly 38 million DM construction, and Minister-President Edmund Stoiber opened the museum on 23 May 2001.
The collection displays German Expressionist works alongside African and Asian objects gathered through the founder's travels. These pieces reflect a passion for art from different cultures and periods.
The museum is accessible by train, car, or boat and offers guided tours, workshops, and art education programs. An onsite café provides refreshments while the park remains open throughout the year.
The museum belongs to the MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus, a network with the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See, Museum Penzberg, Schloßmuseum Murnau and the Lenbachhaus in Munich. In November 2021 collector Joseph Hierling of nearby Tutzing gave it 1,280 paintings and several sculptures of Expressive Realism.
