Buchheim Museum of Imagination

The Buchheim Museum sits on the shore of Lake Starnberg with a modern design that extends like a ship over the water. The building integrates exhibition spaces with a surrounding park where outdoor sculptures are scattered throughout.

The museum was founded in 2001 after initial plans for another location were rejected by local opposition. The move to Bernried allowed the creation of this waterside setting.

The collection displays German Expressionist works alongside African and Asian objects gathered through the founder's travels. These pieces reflect a passion for art from different cultures and periods.

The museum is accessible by train, car, or boat and offers guided tours, workshops, and art education programs. An onsite café provides refreshments while the park remains open throughout the year.

A distinctive feature is the balcony-like platform that extends over the lakeshore like a jetty. This unusual architectural solution creates an immediate connection to the water and makes the place feel extraordinary.
