Burg Birgel, Medieval moated castle in Düren, Germany
The four-wing castle complex contains stone buildings surrounded by water-filled moats and includes a two-story gatehouse on its eastern front.
The castle dates back to 1269, when it first appeared in records connected to Winnemar Frambarch von Birgel, the Marshal of the Count of Jülich.
The property transformed from a noble residence to an educational facility, exemplifying the adaptation of historical structures for modern community needs.
The castle now functions as a public elementary school serving students from the communities of Birgel, Kufferath, and Berzbuir in Düren.
Leopold Schoeller, an industrial magnate, used the castle exclusively for summer festivities and hunting events before his son constructed a new brick manor in 1885.
