Burg Birgel, Medieval moated castle in Düren, Germany
Burg Birgel is a four-wing castle complex in Düren where stone buildings are surrounded by water-filled moats. An eastern gatehouse with two stories marks the main entrance to the fortified compound.
The castle first appeared in records in 1269 connected to Winnemar Frambarch von Birgel, a marshal serving the Count of Jülich. The Schoeller family later acquired the property and used it as a seasonal residence before changes came in the 1800s.
The property transformed from a noble residence to an educational facility, exemplifying the adaptation of historical structures for modern community needs.
The property now operates as a public elementary school for local students. Access to the grounds is limited since it remains an active educational facility with regular classes throughout the year.
An industrial magnate named Leopold Schoeller bought the estate and used it mainly for summer parties and hunting trips in the 1800s. His son later built a separate brick manor on the grounds, showing how the site changed hands and purpose over time.
