The Brotfabrik is a cultural center at Caligariplatz in Berlin's Weißensee district, housed in a former bread factory built in 1914 and expanded in 1929. It contains a 55-seat cinema, a gallery for young German and Eastern European photography, a stage, and a pub.
Bakery master Kohler founded a bakery on the site in 1890; the actual bread factory was built in 1914 for 60,000 marks and extended in 1929. After the baker fled to West Berlin in 1952, the building was divided and used as a mineral water factory and workwear shop. From 1986 it housed a youth club, and on 15 May 1990 it reopened as the Brotfabrik cultural centre.
The space shows films from independent artists and hosts various art exhibitions across its rooms. Visitors encounter small theater groups here and find a platform for experimental works from the Berlin scene.
Visitors should know that on weekdays most events start at 18:00, while they begin earlier on weekends and holidays. The building is wheelchair accessible and offers basic facilities for guests with different needs.
The building's name recalls baker Michael Kohler, who opened a bakery on the site in 1890; the actual bread factory went up in 1914 at a cost of 60,000 marks and was extended in 1929. Debris from World War II damage was found during construction work in 1992.
