Burg Reschenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Passau, Germany
Burg Reschenstein is a castle site on a forested ridge above the Ilz River near Passau, with origins dating back to the 1300s. Today it consists mainly of a standing rectangular tower, while other sections of the fortification remain only as ruins or have vanished entirely.
The site was first documented in 1384 as an outpost of nearby Hals Castle. Over time it housed a bishop's official and then declined from the early 1500s onward.
The site holds official recognition as both an architectural monument and an archaeological site, preserving medieval and early modern findings within its grounds.
The surviving tower can be viewed from outside and remains accessible, while the surrounding ruins and missing sections show how the site has changed over time. Expect uneven ground and steep slopes since the location on a forested ridge requires walking to reach it.
Between 1816 and 1819, parts of the castle walls were taken down and reused as building material for Hals parish church. This recycling shows how the abandoned site became a practical resource for new local construction projects.
