Burg Rethem

Burg Rethem is a medieval castle located at the eastern edge of the old town, with the Aller River forming a natural boundary nearby. The original fortifications have been complemented by a modern cultural center that has occupied the grounds since 2005.

The castle was built around 1200 by the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg to defend their territory against rival nobles. It gained written documentation by 1311 and later served strategic purposes during regional conflicts of the medieval period.

The castle shapes the appearance of the old town and now serves as a cultural meeting place for residents and visitors. Its blend of historical walls with a modern center creates a focal point for local gatherings.

The grounds are easily accessible from the town center and reachable on foot through various pathways. The attached cultural center offers different facilities, so checking opening times in advance is recommended before your visit.

Archaeological excavations in 2000 and 2001 uncovered the buried foundations of residential buildings and defensive structures within the complex. These discoveries revealed how the fortification was originally arranged and helped restore parts of what visitors see today.
