Burg Roggenbach

Burg Roggenbach is a medieval fortress in Wittlekofen perched on a hilltop at about 675 meters elevation. The ruins display two substantial defensive towers built with shaped stone and very thick walls, along with preserved foundation remains.

The fortress was founded around 1180 under the control of the Counts of Nellenberg as a stronghold in this mountainous region. It was later taken over by other noble families and eventually destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War.

The castle served as a residence for noble families who shaped the region and displayed their power through this structure. Today you can see how such fortresses organized daily life and authority over the surrounding lands.

The ruins sit on a hilltop and are reachable by hiking trails that vary in difficulty depending on your starting point. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and the rubble can be tricky to navigate.

The name comes from the former Rockenbach, a small stream that flowed through the area and gave the fortress its name. This old water name is rarely used today and remains unknown to most visitors.
