Burg Eppstein

Burg Eppstein is a medieval castle situated on a hilltop, featuring defensive walls, towers, and structures representing different construction periods across several centuries. The site displays multiple architectural styles that developed over time while serving its purpose as a stronghold.

The castle was founded in 1122 as Ebbensten and served as the residence of the Lords of Eppstein until their lineage ended in 1535. Following the extinction of this noble family, the fortress gradually lost its original purpose and transformed over the centuries.

The castle hosts outdoor cinema screenings in July and the Eppstein Castle Festival in June, offering theater performances and historical reenactments. These events keep the location alive as a gathering place where locals and visitors experience medieval traditions in a contemporary setting.

Visitors can join guided tours of the castle grounds and explore an on-site museum presenting regional history and medieval architecture. The grounds are accessible and tours help visitors understand the different areas and their historical significance.
