Burg Schlüsselburg

Burg Schlüsselburg is a stone fortification with thick walls and typical medieval defensive elements that rise from the surrounding landscape. The structure displays the characteristic form of a fortified manor with preserved masonry sections that reveal its original layout.

The fortress was founded in 1335 and served local rulers as an administrative center and defensive position in a region controlled by competing powers. Over the centuries it gradually lost importance as political authority shifted and settled elsewhere.

The castle once served as the seat of local noble families who controlled the surrounding lands and displayed their power through such fortified strongholds. These structures still shape how people understand the region's past and the social order that existed centuries ago.

The ruins can be viewed from outside, and the preserved walls and foundations are best explored in daylight. Access to the site is straightforward, though sturdy footwear is recommended due to the uneven ground.

The castle is notable for having been taken over and rebuilt by different families across the centuries, resulting in a layering of older and newer construction phases. This historical stratification remains visible in the foundations and walls, telling the story of successive owners and their changing needs.
