Trausnitz Reservoir, reservoir in Germany
Trausnitz Reservoir is a large body of water in the Bavarian town of Trausnitz, created by a concrete dam across the Pfreimd River. The water covers approximately 37 hectares and is surrounded by forests and green areas that define the entire landscape.
The dam was built in 1951 and completed in 1952 to regulate water flow in the region. Since its construction, the reservoir has served for electricity generation, flood prevention, and water storage for the local community.
The dam takes its name from the nearby town of Trausnitz and is deeply woven into local daily life. For decades, residents and visitors have gathered here for quiet outings and outdoor activities that bring the community together.
The paths around the reservoir are well-maintained and accessible for walkers, cyclists, and people with mobility needs. Bring comfortable shoes, water, and snacks, as there are few food options along the trails.
The reservoir has its own small hydroelectric plant with two turbines that together produce nearly 2 megawatts of power and supply energy to thousands of homes each year. This local power generation often goes unnoticed by visitors, even though the equipment is visible on the dam structure.
