Fürstenberg Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Höingen, Germany
The stone remnants of Fürstenberg Castle stand on a hilltop above the Ruhr River, displaying medieval ramparts and architectural structures from the 13th century.
Built around 1295, the castle served as a stronghold for the Archbishop of Cologne until its final destruction in 1343 by the Counts of Arnsberg and Mark.
The castle site contains the Chapel on the Fürstenberg, documented since 1429, reflecting regional religious practices and architectural traditions of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Visitors can explore two distinct fortification areas: the Oldenburg rampart system with the castle chapel and the medieval stone structure called Richters Köpfchen.
The castle gave birth to the House of Fürstenberg when Hermann, originally from Binolen family, adopted the name after becoming the first knight of this fortress.
