Schloss Schönstadt, Medieval castle in Schönstadt, Germany.
Schloss Schönstadt is a castle featuring a two-story manor house topped with a mansard roof and a late Gothic octagonal tower positioned at its southwestern corner. The structure was originally built as a water castle and retains its defensive layout with surrounding fortifications.
The castle was first documented in 1344 as a water fortress with defensive moats surrounding its walls. Major renovations took place between 1749 and 1751 under the direction of Georg Friedrich Milchling von Schönstadt.
The castle passed through generations of noble families, from the Milchling dynasty to the von Bethmann family through marriage connections.
The castle remains in private ownership and access to the interior requires prior permission from the owners. The exterior can be viewed from the surrounding paths and grounds, offering views of the towers and water features.
Around 1900, industrial pioneer Eugen Lucius acquired the castle and added a second octagonal tower to its grounds. This addition reflects the connection between industrial wealth and historic estates during the period.
