Burg Sinzenich, Medieval castle in Zülpich, Germany
Burg Sinzenich is a medieval fortified residence in Zülpich surrounded by water-filled moats fed by the Rotbach stream. The remaining walls and foundations display the substantial stone structures that were built to defend the estate.
The castle was founded by the Sinzenich family and has been documented since the 13th century before passing to the Lords of Gertzen in 1374. In the 18th century an earthquake caused significant damage and led to the collapse of the manor house.
The castle displays regional building traditions through its water-filled moat system that still shapes the grounds today. Visitors can observe how defensive structures were designed in the Middle Ages to protect the inhabitants.
The site is located at Ritterstrasse 15 in Zülpich-Sinzenich and portions are accessible to visitors, with the moats and wall remnants clearly showing the layout. It is best explored from the outside as only parts of the original fortification have survived.
An earthquake in 1755 caused such severe damage that the manor house collapsed in 1769 and was never rebuilt. This disaster marked the final decline of the estate as an inhabited noble residence.
