Greifenstein Castle

Greifenstein Castle is a stone fortress perched at 441 meters above sea level on a hilltop with sweeping views over the Dill valley. The building combines medieval fortifications with Baroque additions, including a twin-towered keep with internal spiral staircase.

The castle received its first documented mention in 1160 when it served as a military stronghold. In 1676, Wilhelm Moritz of Solms-Greifenstein transformed it into a Baroque residence, marking a shift from its earlier defensive purpose.

The chapel spaces display Italian stucco work from the 17th century, and Gothic architecture in another chapel with original medieval wall paintings. These rooms show how different artistic styles and periods merged within the walls over centuries.

The castle grounds welcome visitors and offer guided tours through the twin-towered keep and its spiral staircase. A restaurant on-site provides refreshments during your visit.

The Brother Tower holds three bells and displays a gryphon weather vane that crowns the structure. The castle well extends 90 meters deep, revealing the engineering skill of its historical residents.
