Burg Gruttenstein

Burg Gruttenstein is a stone fortress positioned on a hilltop overlooking Bad Reichenhall, with residential and farm buildings arranged around a central courtyard. The layout shows typical medieval fortification features with thick walls and gateways.

Duke Ludwig I of the Wittelsbach family ordered construction of this fortress in 1218 to protect Bad Reichenhall and its valuable salt springs. The structure was a strategic military work designed to secure the region's trade routes and natural resources.

The castle functions as a venue for wine tastings, Easter markets, and advent celebrations held throughout the year. Visitors experience how the local community uses this space to maintain regional traditions and gather together.

Access to the castle is at Pfannhauserweg 3 but is mainly tied to scheduled events and celebrations. Planning ahead to check what activities are taking place is recommended, as drop-in visits are limited.

The castle lacks the typical towers found in most medieval fortifications, instead featuring a prominent shield wall that once served as part of the city's defensive system. This unusual design makes it a rare example of military architecture in the region.
