The castle was established between 1147 and 1158 by Marquard von Grumbach, serving as a stronghold until Wilhelm von Grumbach's execution in 1567.

The castle remains under private ownership at Am Burggraben 11, and visitors need to observe posted signs regarding access restrictions.
