Burg Hainchan

Burg Hainchan is a medieval fortified castle at the edge of Netphen with two water-filled moats and defensive towers from various periods. The compound combines original castle structures with modern buildings and sits within a quiet, green setting.

The castle first appears in written records in 1290 as the seat of the noble Hain family, then changed ownership to Count Heinrich I of Nassau-Siegen in 1313. This transfer marked the beginning of a new era under regional territorial rulers.

The castle reflects regional defense architecture with its four corner towers and vaulted medieval cellar, typical of noble strongholds built to control the surrounding valley. This style was common among local lords who needed to protect their lands.

The castle grounds connect to hiking trails through the historical fortifications with routes of varying difficulty around the property. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and paths change depending on weather conditions.

After major restoration work in 1976, the castle received a completely new purpose and is now operated by Institut Lebenshilfe. This transformation demonstrates how medieval structures can be preserved and adapted for modern charitable purposes.
