Burg Hartenstein is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a rise near Hartenstein in the Nürnberger Land district of Middle Franconia. Large stone blocks with lewis holes and pottery finds point to construction in the first half of the 13th century, and the castle is first documented in 1268 with Rupertus miles dictus de Hertenstein. The site preserves foundations and wall remains of the main building and outer defences.
The castle was founded in medieval times by the Hartenstein family to control and protect the surrounding territories. After centuries of use, the structure was abandoned and gradually declined into the ruins visible today.
The name comes from the Hartenstein family who ruled the area during medieval times and shaped the region. Visitors can still see the stone foundations that reveal how the castle was organized and what role it played in the local landscape.
