Burg Altendorf, Medieval castle ruins in Essen, Germany
The castle structure comprises an outer bailey and a main castle, enclosed by circular walls with a height reaching 21.7 meters.
The construction of Burg Altendorf began in the second half of the 12th century, with the Lords of Altendorf first documented as residents in 1297.
The residential tower of Burg Altendorf stands as the largest preserved structure of its kind between the Rhine and Weser rivers in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The castle grounds remain accessible throughout the year, while the residential tower opens for visits on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 3 PM to 5 PM.
Archaeological excavations conducted between 1966 and 1969 revealed substantial information about the castle's construction methods and historical usage patterns.
