Burg Altendorf, Medieval castle ruins in Essen, Germany
Burg Altendorf is a castle complex featuring an outer defensive ring and an inner fortress, surrounded by thick circular walls. The structure combines practical military design with sturdy stone construction that has endured for many centuries.
Construction began in the second half of the 12th century when the region was consolidating its power structures. The Lords of Altendorf became documented residents in 1297 and maintained their stronghold through changing medieval times.
The residential tower served as a symbol of power for the local ruling family across centuries and still shapes the identity of the Altendorf area. Visitors can sense the importance this structure held for the people who lived under the lords' authority.
The grounds remain open year-round for visitors to explore the outer areas and ruins at their own pace. The residential tower opens on specific days, allowing visitors to step inside and see how the space was actually organized.
Excavations conducted between 1966 and 1969 uncovered important clues about how the castle was built and used over time. The objects and traces discovered during these digs help present-day visitors understand what daily life was like inside a medieval fortress.
