Description
Ruine Karlstein comprises the stone remains of a fortress situated high on Pankrazfelsen peak above Bad Reichenhall. The location overlooks the road to Thumsee lake within the mountainous Berchtesgadener Land landscape.
History
Founded in 1150 by Konrad von Peilstein, the fortress came under Bavarian ducal rule in 1218. It later served as a residence for wealthy Reichenhall citizens.
Culture
The name comes from a medieval military leader called Karl, and the nearby Pankrazkirche remains an active pilgrimage church today. This religious site shows how closely the castle was connected to the spiritual life of the region.
Practical
Multiple hiking trails of varying difficulty lead to the ruins, with the Pankraz-Kircherl loop from Weißbach offering a comfortable route. The climb is manageable and the site is easily accessible on foot.
