Burg Laaber, Medieval castle ruin in Laaber, Bavaria
Burg Laaber is a castle ruin standing near the St. Johannes Evangelist Church, with wall sections and structural foundations from the medieval period still visible. The site shows remains of defensive structures and stone foundations that once formed the original fortress.
The castle was built around 1100 and served as a seat for the Lords of Laaber, a ministerial family. By 1200 it gained recognition as an imperial ministerial holding.
The stone blocks from the castle were later reused in the neighboring cemetery wall, showing how medieval building techniques endured through the centuries. Visitors can still spot these repurposed stones in the current structure.
The ruin sits on marked walking paths and is freely accessible from outside. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven and some sections are overgrown.
The Romanesque church next to the ruin was originally built as the castle chapel and its tower reveals the early construction period of this medieval complex. This connection between church and fortress remains visible in how they stand together today.
