Burgruine

Burgruine Leienfels is a castle ruin in Pottenstein set on elevated terrain in the Bavarian region. The remaining walls and foundations reveal the layout of residential quarters, defensive structures, and how rooms were organized within the fortress.

The fortress began around 1300 as a stronghold for the Hohenegg family who ruled the surrounding territory. It suffered damage during the peasant uprisings of the early 1500s and was gradually abandoned afterward.

The site reveals how medieval inhabitants organized defense and authority from this hilltop location. Walking through the ruins helps you understand what daily life and power structures looked like in that era.

The site is generally accessible at any time without entry fees since it remains in open ground. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb as the path has steep sections and uneven ground throughout the ruins.

The fortress was built using stone quarried from the surrounding hillside, a common practice that saved time and labor. The builders cleverly incorporated the natural slopes into the design to strengthen its defensive position.
