Burgruine Leuchtenberg

Burgruine Leuchtenberg is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill in Leuchtenberg. The site displays a rectangular keep and walls that trace the outline of the former fortification.

The castle was built around 1300 by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg as their residence. After 1322, they relocated their seat, and the fortress lost its primary function.

The ruin functions as an open-air theater where the Upper Palatinate Regional Theater stages summer performances. This brings visitors to experience theater against the backdrop of these centuries-old walls.

Walking across the site requires sturdy shoes because the terrain is uneven and parts include steep sections. Plan to spend time wandering the grounds to appreciate the remaining structures.

The remaining keep displays bossy stonework, a distinctive medieval building technique. This makes the ruin a notable example of how castles were constructed during that era.
