Burgruine Lichtenstein in Pommelsbrunn, Medieval castle ruin near Pommelsbrunn, Germany.
Burgruine Lichtenstein stands on a ridge of Schleußberg rising 512 meters above sea level. From this height, the structure overlooks the forests and villages spread across the Franconian landscape below.
The fortress was first mentioned in 1270 and remained under Bavarian control for generations. It was destroyed in 1421 and gradually became the ruins visible today.
The name comes from the von Lichtenstein family who ruled here for centuries and shaped the structure. Visitors can still see carved stone window frames and doorways that show how residents lived in these rooms.
The ruins are accessible from Pommelsbrunn via marked hiking trails equipped with informational signs. The route is well-maintained and provides information about the historical layout at key points.
Archaeological finds in the stonework reveal pottery and objects from the early 13th century. These artifacts give visitors a rare glimpse into the daily life of the medieval inhabitants.
