Burg Lichtenfels

Burg Lichtenfels is a stone castle perched on high ground above the Orke river, retaining its Gothic walls and defensive structures from its original construction. The fortress displays the typical features of medieval fortification design with sturdy ramparts and imposing stonework.

The castle was founded in 1189 by the Abbot of Corvey and later destroyed, then rebuilt between 1223 and 1230 under different rule. This reconstruction marked a shift in who controlled the fortress as regional powers changed hands.

The castle reflects the changing power dynamics of medieval Germany, transitioning between religious authorities and noble families through numerous conflicts.

The castle is privately owned and closed to the public except for wedding ceremonies coordinated with local authorities. Before planning a visit, check with local contacts to learn about any specific occasions when viewing the grounds may be permitted.

In the early 2000s an IT security company called Biodata operated from the castle grounds. The company failed in 2001, creating a brief and unexpected chapter in the fortress's recent story.
