Burg Linz is a stone fortress positioned on elevated ground above the Rhine River, featuring a central tower and defensive walls. The construction displays medieval architecture with Gothic elements visible in its surviving foundations and tower structures.
Archbishop Heinrich von Virneburg commissioned the castle between 1364 and 1368 to control toll revenues along the Rhine trade route. Financial pressures after its completion led to the fortress being temporarily pledged to the Electorate of Trier.
The castle serves as a testament to medieval architectural techniques, displaying Gothic elements in its remaining original foundations and tower structure.
The castle is accessed through Burgplatz street with views overlooking the Rhine. Visitors should be aware that the historic structure presents accessibility challenges for wheelchair users due to uneven terrain and steep passages.
The castle required 30,000 Cologne marks for construction, leading to its temporary pledge to the Electorate of Trier for eight years after completion.
